hardwood floor protection during kitchen remodel
Hi, I'm new to the Forum. Spouse and I will be getting new kitchen cabinets installed in a couple of months. We've been told to protect the floor. I need suggestions on what would work best for floor protection--tarps, heavy contractor paper or something else?

We often use red rosin paper or builders paper taped together and to the trim and rubber mats on top. Do not tape anything directly to the floor.

Just don't get the rosin paper wet from any water, it bleeds and stains....
I usually blue-tape (extended release) some brown Kraft-paper followed by blank door skins, a few dollars each, then paper-over which makes it easier to sweep. Well protected from dings, dents and mud. Rubber mats work well, as said. The scrap carpet runners near the entrances stop most of the boot residue. Add furnace filters in front of the cold-air returns if drywalling.

GBR does it the same as I do---except I use masonite or luan ply Both are cheap and often junk sheets can be found in the mark down pile----

Go with the 1/4 in ply. If you are doing any other remodel work in the house, you could also put sheets of drywall down to protect the floor and then hang it in another room later.
Clean the floor thoroughly before you put anything down. Dust and grit under the protective cover will be ground into the surface.

Use some cardboard, thin plywood, or luan. These will work best to protect your floor

Luaun here also, tape the seams with Gorilla Brand duct tape.

Absolutely, luaun with seams taped well. Just paper will not hold up very long and will not protect when someone drops a tape measure or hammer.

I work for a construction management company and we require that the finished footing be covered with rosin paper taped at the seams with painter's tape then Masonite over that with the seams covered with duct tape. Good Luck!

I was going to suggest red rosin along with lauan or masonite, but since the cabinets will be installed later there is more chance of water spillage which may be a problem with the red rosin paper.

Before I started doin my own work, I had a contractor who would always use a product called Ramboard (or Ram Board?). I'm pretty hard to please but it did a great job at protecting my hardwood. I'm trying to figure out what to use on my carpets. All of those adhesive plastic products will leave residue if they are down too long I hear.

Yup! Take it from me, they leave a slightly sticky residue, you can't feel it and you don't even know it is there until a little time passes and the areas begin to collect all the dirt and crap that gets drug in. I paid to have several long corridors in a college dorm steam cleaned a few years ago. We laid down a path of protection but didn't go wall to wall. That was my downfall. The protected areas got really dirty really fast and it was obvious what had caused it. Had we laid down protection wall to wall no one would have ever noticed it.

Ram Board works great -- protects liek paper, but will also protect from hammer drops, etc. Spill reistant too.
