Hardwood floor makes popping sound

Hi,
In two sections of our house the hard wood floors make a popping sound when you step in the area then step out of it. I'm assuming either the hardwoods aren't installed correctly , the subfloor isn't down good enough or there is something in the basement that is maybe rubbing or making the sound when we step in the area then leave the area.
Any ideas ?

Thanks

If there is access from below, have someone walk around above while you listen, look, and feel for the movement from below.

Once you find the movement, figure out a way to eliminate it. This will probably involve screws driven from below, with extreme care as to the length of the screw.

Could be that you just need to re-fasten the hardwood to the subfloor. Could be that the subfloor is loos from one of the joists. In either case, a properly placed, proper length screw will work.

And you may need your partner to stand on the loose spot while you re-fasten it.

I'd use a self-drilling wood screw. Don't use drywall screws, as they are way to brittle for use in wood floors.
