Hardwood floor install help

Hi guys, I am installing hardwood floors. I have a small hallway that is off level, about 1/2 inch. Is there a self leveing compound that can be used when nailing hardwood floors? I know most of those self leveling compunds are cement based products. How can I level this floor? Should I use roof shingles, or use 1/2 plywood to try to level floor? Thanks.
