Hardwood Floor Care

Hi All,

We just had white oak hardwood floors installed with a natural finish and they are absolutely beautiful. After installation, three coats of polyurethane were applied with sanding between each coat.

How do we care for them? Do we periodically apply a wax coating or some other protective barrier? Do we periodically buff them?

Thanks,
Bob

Keep any product that says "wax" or "polish" or any of those rejuvinator/refresher/reinvigorater products as far from your floor as possible. They will cause nothing but problems.

Sweep your floor with a soft bristle broom or vacuum it (without the spinning beater brushes) to get the big stuff up. The more often you do that the better, as any dirt or grit on your floor turns into sandpaper when you walk on it.

Best thing to clean it with is a spray cleaner like 'Basic Coatings Squeaky Clean' or 'Bona Professional Hardwood Cleaner'. A cleaner you mist down, and then wipe over with a microfiber mop. You only want to do this when it looks like it needs it though, don't make it a regular 'once a week' type of thing... just when it needs it.

Vinegar and water is a fairly common solution as well. It works, but the spray cleaners above are safer.

Whatever you do, please don't use waxes or polishes, and don't wet mop it.
