You were right about the caulking, although I haven't tried to remove it yet. With regards to the finishing nail, there isn't a wood subfloor, but rather just a concrete slab, so I believe it would have to be glued. My concern is that I don't want to rip the whole strip up since more half of it appears to be solidly-attached. With the carpet pushing up against it from one side, there isn't any clearance to work any glue in unless I came in with a syringe of sorts.
