Hardwood or Carpet on Stairs?
Need your opinions and/or pictures for help on this one..
DH and I are planning on replacing the flooring on the second level of our home with hardwood (it's currently really old carpet) - but we have a disagreement on what kind of flooring should go on the stairs.
At the moment, our foyer is hardwood and the stairs and upstairs hallway/rooms are carpeted. DH doesn't like the idea of hardwood stairs b/c everyone always puts runners on them anyway which covers up the hardwood flooring. So he wants to leave the stairs carpeted and have the top and bottom floors be hardwood. Personally, I think it will look a little weird, but would be open to the idea if I can see a decent image of it looking good.
Does anyone have this set up in their house or have you seen it somewhere before? What are your thoughts on how it would look?
Thanks for the help!
Sounds like you're just trying to resolve a disagreement so I'll just offer my experience.
We bought our ranch style house freshly recarpeted a few years ago. The entire house (except kitchen and bath) was carpeted, including the basement and stairs. In this case, carpet on the stairs makes perfect sense.
The house was flooded a few months after we bought it and we replaced everything upstairs with tile and laminate. I'm just now finally tiling the basement.
The problem is I can't figure out what to do about the stairs. They're in pretty rough shape -- it looks like they must have floated in the flood and landed about an inch from where they were, there's now a gap between the stairs and wall, the kick boards are all kicked back and they creak like crazy. So I'll rebuild them, but... how do I cover them?
Carpet (in both our cases) is the easiest solution. I could pay someone to cover them up and it should hide the gaps. But I always thought having hard floors everywhere in the house except the stairs is pretty backwards.
So... long story short, I agree.
I would use carpet no question, especially if you have kids. Hardwood on stairs can be really slick.
I'm also thinking about options for our stairs and had pretty much decided on staining our stairs until I read Rusty's comment. Something I hadn't considered. Our four older dogs will have a hard time without the carpet.
So now I'm back to undecided too. :(
