Co-worker is renovating an old house and will be doing some tile work over conventional floor framing and foundation. What is the difference between the Hardie cement board substrate products and the panel siding products? He says he can get the panel siding at a cheaper cost per SF than the backer board.
The panel siding products are slightly thicker than the 1/4" backer board products. But don't the backer board products have a rougher surface which probably helps with thinset adhesion?
The subflooring is some kind of 3/4" panel product but isn't really all that great. He was talking about putting this backer board down and then using a self-leveling compound, but I'm not sure if that's the best way to level a conventionally framed floor.
