Hallway Flooring
The Home Depot book "Flooring 1-2-3" says "Apply hallway flooring so it runs the length of the hall regardless of the joist direction". I was under the impression that the flooring should always run across the joists unless additional subfloor was added.

Anyone know why joist direction does not matter in hallways?

FYI my subflooring is Huber PFS VIP+ 23/32" OSB with 24" OC engineered flooring joists.

And, what type of flooring are you planning on using?

Sorry, I am definitely slipping. The flooring will be Bruce prefinished 2-1/4" x 3/4" red oak hardwood strips. It's an engineered subfloor system with 23/32" OSB & 24" spaced joists.

I haven't selected a nailing system or bought a nailer, if that makes any difference.

I don't know but
I certainly wouldn't change directions if the hall way was connected to another area. Such as a living room or dinning room. I have laid parallel with the joists in my own home because it looks better than running across the joists. Engineered truss type 2' OC with 3/4 T&G plywood no problems after 3yrs.

Let me add this to your concern what if it's an "L" shaped hall way will you run both parts of the hall way the length ways or all the same direction. Because of the small area of the hall there is less chance of movement and appearance or flow is more important so if coming of another area i would maintain the flow be it across the joist or parallel as I would maintain continuity in an "L" shaped hall.
