grout cracks in shower

Pictures below.

We are seeing some cracks in the grout in our shower, under the shower door, at the corners. Its happening on both sides of the "step" (inside and outside shower)

I would like to know what I can do to fix this?

Also, we have a small ledge in the shower. The gap between the top of the ledge and the shower wall had the same problem. It was sealed with a caulk. So I removed existing caulk and put in a new one. But the new one is also not holding, its wet and soggy. I am afraid water is going under the tiles.

Crack #2 (after caulking a few months ago, which is now soft & wet)

BTW, this a brand new home (1 yr)

That doesn't look good, do the tiles have any play if you push on them?
The grout doesn't look like it was done correctly
That being said I'm wondering what was done under the tiles??

It's hard to tell but is that cement board that I see we're the grout is missing?

What type of caulk did you use?
Regular caulk or silicone?

Thanks for the quick response. The tiles dont have any play when I push on them. The entire bath room (quite big) is done in the same tile including the jet tub. The only places with problems are the two I described here.

The ledge, was actually initially laid out with smaller tile as shown in the first & second pictures. That, after few months, cracked like shown in first & second pics. So the contractor got the tile guy to rip out the existing beautiful small tile surface ( sad face ) and put a single tile as shown in fourth picture. But the guy left a wider than earlier gap between the back wall and the ledge surface and sealed it with caulk. It didnt stay for long and I put in new caulk which was ok for a few months. I think it was a silicone waterproof caulk, I will head home and clarify if its not. Sorry, I am new to all this.

The quality of the construction is very good, overall. we were there every single day and the contractor was there 100% of the time. But, the shower tiles keep causing issues at one place or the other.

The cracks in first of pics is under the shower door.

I will also check the tiles for play.

I'd have to know what materials were used to bond the tile, to what they are bonded and what and how was used as the waterproofing system.

Your problem is caused by one or all of the above. I suspect the waterproofing was not done correctly, therefore the wood framing swelled causing the cracks.

You'll need to rip out the areas to see if it can be salvaged. Send us pic too. When work like this is discovered we usually find other things that were also done wrong.

Don't forget. Shower must be waterproofed BEFORE any tile, grout and caulking are installed. Tile and grout does NOT make anything waterproof.

You need to document, and send letters.

Yes what Jaz said would be the best option in this case unfortunately
You would be better off not putting a band aid on this one.

I agree with Jazz,I would bet that all of the framing is water logged and acting like a sponge.

whoa! that sounds scary. this house is hardly a year old. the first three are of the curb under the shower door. i went back and looked at it. what u guys said seems right. it seems to be expanding and cracking up the grout.

time to talk to the contractor.

ok, the tile guy came by, removed grout from all the problematic places, made sure there was no other problem, regrouted and sealed with 100% silicon caulk. looks great now but ... still a mystery what happened. I was told it was a bad job to start with

Read this--it will give you an idea how a pan should be built.

I suspect you have a Durrock covered curb--with nails penetrating the liner---allowing water to get to the wood curb---Mike---

Thanks everyone. oh'mike, unfortunately, I was not around when they did the bath. So I am not sure how they did it. However, the contractor lives nearby and seems like a honest man. If things get bad again, I will come back and update this thread.

In the mean time, is it a good idea to cover all the edges (change of plane) with the silicon caulk? right now all the corners (floor->wall transitions) have the silicon caulk. Also the curb plane changes are silicon caulked.
