Getting tile the same level as my hardwood?

I will be installing new tile in my kitchen. One side of the kitchen will be meeting the hardwood I have in the family room. I think the wood will be about 1/8 higher once there is a layer of thinset under the tile. I don't want to have to use any type of transition threshold on top of the wood/tile. What is the best way to get the tile to meet the hardwood? Is it okay to stick something under the tile? Do they make some sort of cement board strips?

I think we might need a little more info, first. What do you have now, and how do you intend to prep the floor for the tile?

The tile is going over a bare concrete slab.

Okay-- I'm assuming the hardwood will be 1/2" glue-down. If you're sure you're going to be an 1/8" low, what you might do (and it wouldn't be a bad idea anyway) is go over the slab where the tile's going to be with Schluter's Ditra membrane first. That'll raise the floor an 1/8".

The cement boards will be too thick and you will end up with the tile higher than the hardwood. Try ditra, it has a lower profile. you may also consider using a metal jolly against the hardwood rather than just grouting the transiton to the wood. the wood will expand/contract and may seperate from the grout. Both the jolly and ditra can be purchased from Schluter. The jolly comes in different colors and sizes to accomodate the thickness of the tile.

Or maybe instead of doing Jolly, maybe just use a color matched siliconized latex caulk?
