GE Silicone II won't adhere to grout

Yesterday I caulked the joint between our new fiberglass shower pan and the new tile floor, and along the adjacent wall. The caulk seems cured, but it is not adhering to the sanded grout between the tile and the shower pan. For that matter, it's not sticking all that well to the shower pan, either. I admit I didn't do any special cleaning to the surfaces, as they are both new; I just brushed off the dust and grout sand particles off the grout.

After applying the grout, it was allowed to cure for four days (for the first two days, I spritzed it with water 3x a day). I then sealed it with a penetrating sealer and waited two more days before caulking. The sealer does not have a surface finish; you can't tell from looking or touching the grout if it's been sealed or not.

On the adjacent wall, the caulk--from the same tube--seems to be adhering just fine to the tile and to the painted drywall.

Is the sealed grout preventing the Silicone II from sticking, and, if so, is there a work-around? And why won't the caulk stick to the shower pan?

Thanks,
Jeff

Probably still too damp. Silicone hates wet.

GE Silicone II won't adhere to grout

Thanks, Bill, but how would that affect the caulk's ability to stick to the shower pan?

Silicone caulk can go bad--How old is the tube? There is a date code on the tube--

Also freezing can ruin it.

Mike, I don't recall checking for a date code, but I don't think it was old. Brad, I waited like a week or so before caulking again; it worked all right the second time, so perhaps it was a little residual moisture from the sealant.

GE Silicone II won't adhere to grout

Just talked to GE Tech Rep and was told 100 percent silicone won't adhere to acrylics. Recommended using 100 percent acrylic latex sealant. Also provided details on removing old silicone: soak for 30 mins in alchol from pharmacy (not the denatured type).

Correction: 99% alcohol - it's all denatured to make it non-drinkable.
