Gaps in stairway

I live in a modular home and would like to remove the stairway carpet and refinish or paint the steps. Upon inspection, I found that there is a gap on either side of the steps too big to leave undone. Is there anything that will fill in these gaps or will I need to recarpet? The space is about 1/2-3/4 inch or more. Thank you for any advice.

Gaps in stairway

Thanks for all your help with my stairway question. I took off the carpet and they don't look nearly as bad as I'd thought they would. I will just have to pull staples, sand and paint the risers.
