fuzzy stuff growing on basement floor
What it is I have no idea. We have had a very wet year, it is growing under the carpet as well as in the furnace room without carpet. The house was built in 1980 and one contractor thought it may have been fiberglass concete. I would like to get rid of the fuzzy stuff .

A good soaking with bleach. Not just a spray or moistening. Cover every square inch. Remove and discard the carpeting.

If it is white, it could be some of the chemical content of the concrete separating and returning to the surface. This is called efflorescence (no U), also brought about by moisture coming through from the outside. It would be removed using muriatic acid followed by a good rinse. But since you don't know for sure, do the mold killing first.

Google efflorescence and see if that is what it is before you do anything for mold that may/may not exist. It is a salt that leaches out of the block/concrete due to higher than usual moisture levels, or at least higher than previous.

Mold is a bacteria and would be fuzzy/hairy and soft while efflorescence is a form of mineral and would be somewhat crusty and harder and in some cases crystallized.:)

Mold spores become airborne and can be very harmful to your respiratory health while efflorescence doesn't usually become airborne without being disturbed and has no real health issues.

Err on the side of caution and treat for mold first.:)
