Flooring

What is the process for replacing carpet with vinyl or stick on tile? Any common pitfalls I should know before starting?

The floor must be perfectly smooth. Any imperfections will show.

Remove the carpet, pad and tack strip. Then remove all staples, sweep really well and then add the vinyl or stick down tiles if you have a nice, clean plywood subfloor. If you have another type of subfloor; osb, particle board, pine planks etc, I would first add a layer of 1/4" luan prior to adding the vinyl. It will stick better. The luan is stapled down.
