finding matching carpet

Hi,

We will be putting our house on the market in the next month so and currently making improvements. We have berber carpet in the master bathroom and stairs and two bedroom second floor. The carpet in the stairs and bedroom on the second floor is in fairly good condition because it has not been used much. We need to replace the carpet in the master bedroom - the problem is that I can't find the same carpet anywhere (well, so far I have looked at HomeDepot and Lowes - in store). This is the original carpet in the house - the house was built in 2001. How should I go about finding the same (or very similar) carpet to replace only in the mastered?

Thanks,
M

Go to a carpet specialist. They can find the best available match - it will probably be special order.

Very little chance that you will find the same. Carpet styles and colors change constantly. Any chance you would have the bill from installation? It might give you the manufacturer. Other than that, I would take a piece of it around to some independent stores and see if they can come close.

Go see MaryMargaret at ProSource. 901-388-8848. She knows carpet very well. Bring a sample with you. The same carpet most likely isn't being made, but she can probably find you something similar.

imo. just get something that looks ok alongside what you already have. doesn't have to match.

This is going to be a stupid question - I don't have a sample of the carpet, so shall I just cut from a corner to bring to ProSource? Photos from my iPhone won't work?

the sample will also show them the pile and backing, among other things.

another thing to consider is putting some type of laminate or hardwood or something in the MBR. in our other BDR we have carpeting, but our MBR has hard flooring. we use a rug to bring warmth into the room.

Pictures are never enough if you want a good match. You also need to figure out which fiber is being used, it's weight, and a whole lot of other things that don't show up except in person. Sometimes there will be a mill mark on the back of carpet, and that can help a lot. Also, you want to be able to assess the condition of the padding under the carpet, especially if there have been pet accidents or other types of spills. That usually means it's mandatory to replace the padding as well, even if you're moving and don't really care about carpet longevity.
