I recently purchased a home that has a room with rough cut, porous stone and this floor is absolutely FILTHY! The previous owners apparently never cleaned it. My question is how do I clean this floor? Mopping doesn't seem to help since the filth has completely worked its way into the floor. My question is how in the heck do I clean this or am I stuck with this nasty floor forever? Someone suggested cleaning it with muriatic acid (yikes!) but is there a less caustic method to clean it?
You might want to try some 409 Natural Stone Cleaner. I bought a spray bottle of the stuff to use to clean up the fireplace hearth, which looked a bit dirty after years of use. The stuff worked pretty good too. I sprayed it on and used a scrub brush to work it in, and then rinsed with water and dried it. In your case you might want to rent a floor buffer with a scrubbing pad. I only did a small area so I didn't have to worry about breathing the fumes, and I honestly don't remember whether there were any, but if I were doing a floor I'd probably wear a respirator just to be on the safe side.
