Filling in the gaps in between floor boards
got a question, hope someone can advise me..as im a damsel in distress;)
Its a 1930s bungalow.
I want to strip my hallway floor boards. ive pulled up the carpet, and they look in good condition. Ive looked under the floorboards, and theres bare earth. with a gap of about a foot, between the joists and the earth
will i get a must earthy smell coming up through the gaps?
would you suggest i fill the gaps?
and if so, with what?
Much of the solid wood flooring that was used in the past was tongue and groove type. This would have prevented this situation. I would think Yes, you will get a smell. You will also have very poor insulating properties and insects of course can fit threw a gap you can see threw. I would consider just putting a underlayment over it then laying tile or something. If you are in love with the flooring and don't want to cover it up then you will have to spend some time in your crawl space. I would say fasten a sheet of poly on the underside going with the flooring and wrapping the joists then fasten a fiberglass or similar insulation in-between the joists. Of course if it is just a foot not say 1 3/4 then is would not be possible to do the latter without first ripping out the floor.
This is in part of your house with out the basement. maybe you have some sort of access so you can attempt the repairs from.
