FACE nailing on hardwood stair nose ?
The web site I got the instruction said this is not required if the nose can was insert very strong and hard onto the stair with glue... I just feel a bit uncomfortable for that, as you know the nose is the place with the heaviest load and heaviest bombarment, people try to put all the load onto it sometimes when walking down the stairs, so purely support by glue and strong embedding is not secure enough seems...
Up to now, I remember all the hardwood stairs I saw got face nails on their nose..... what is the expert opinion here... thanks... |
I think you should always face nail the nosing. Make sure you pre-drill for the finishing nail though.

I have never even entertained the idea of trusting glue only for a nosing . I predrill and send in 3 12d casing nails.

When predrilling, make sure you have plenty of drill bits of the same size on hand. Otherwise, when one breaks, as it will, you'll be running out to Home Depot.

I face nails some nose with PC 16 guage 2" finish nailer. It looks ok... I didn't do predrill as I saw that is what the builder do on other nose in the house..... now you said that... I will go back to nail the other 2 steps which I solely trust on glue tonight.... Thanks...
