Engineered hardwood floors seem to have been discussed at length, but...


What brands are recommended?

I'd prefer a 5" plank, floating, oak in natural or gunstock and about $4/sq. ft. I'm open to other color and plank width options.

Any suggestions? I'm mainly finding the Bruce Turlington would meet my requirements, but there seem to be mixed reviews.

all depends. if there is a reason you require an engineered floor over solid wood i would defiantly stick with a brand name. bruce would be one, home depot has a great return policy and sells their product. the one place i would all but beg you to avoid is lumber liquidators

Never even considered Lumber Liquidators. Had to google and see if there was even one in the area!

The main reason for engineered over solid hardwood is ease of install and the fact that we will probably only be here 5-7 years.

don't let that snap click stuff fool you. imo real hardwood is actually easier to install for one main reason. with a floor nailer you can nail/staple down and bang together minor imperfections and twists. with click lock a warped board would be a pain. if you're only going to be there for a few years cost can be an issue but you can pick up real 3/4" soild wood starting at $3 a sq pre finished. in my experience the cost for solid and engineered is very close. there's also a slight retail perk in solid wood when you sell the house.
