engineered hardwood over regular plywood

I am in the process of preparing my subfloor for the installation of engineered hardwood. My home was built in the 1940's and has an existing subfloor that consists of 3/4" t&g boards installed on 16" OC floor joists. The subfloor is in good condition but I would like to stiffen and level it by covering it with a layer of plywood. The lumber store has high quality underlayment available but I feel that regular plywood would be adequate in my case. Do I need the sanded/clear underlayment for engineered hardwood or would regular 1/2" ply be ok (glued and screwed)?

Thanks a bunch,

If the existing floor is in good condition why not just screw it down to within an inch of it life? The added plywood may cause you grief with the additional height.

Thanks for reply. In my opinion there is too much deflection in existing subfloor and it is not flat enough. The plywood should solve these issues- no concern of floor height- gutted entire first floor of home.

In that case, lay away. You still should screw the new floor down though
