electrical box service cable

Question...a home inspection on a house that I'm buying brought up an issue. It's being suggested that the service cable running to the main electrical box in the garage may be too small. It states that the box is a 200 amp box and the capacity of the service cable is 100 amp. How big of a deal is this? Suggestions gentlemen? Thanks

How does power go to the garage ?
Is there a main panel with a breaker in the house ?

I have a 100a panel in my pool cabana, fed by a 60a breaker in main panel

Or does power go to the garage 1st, then the house ?

thanks for the reply...It looks like there's just the panel in the garage. There's an outbuilding that the owner built about 6 years ago that has it's own separate panel, so I'm not really sure where the power goes first, but my guess would be the garage.

I love home inspectors

Does the panel have a main breaker? If so, what is it's current rating?

Where are you located ?
You need to verify the power setup
Size of the incoming wire
If it goes to a main shut-off somewhere 1st
Is the garage attached to the house ?

Many places the POCO owns & installs the feed wire
Possible they said it could feed a 200a panel
Also possible someone just installed the 200a panel without checking

I'm in the midwest, specificially western Illinois and yes the garage is attached. As far as the question does the panel have a main breaker and what is the rating...I'm not sure..

Well, find out. Find out if there is a disconnect on the outside of the house and what the current rating is. If not, find out the rating of the main breaker in the panel.
