Dog damaged hardwood

Couple years back our lab shut herself in the powder room, then clawed the door and oak flooring until we arrived home and released her. The floor damage is very limited - less then a 1/2 foot square and only the lighter portions of wood show damage. The darker grained streaks running through are almost perfect. (Guessing the grains are harder.) I was wondering if I could just take a comparable stain, wipe on/off the softer damaged area, then hit the area with a light coat of water based poly to bring it back to nearly new?

There are felt markers that might work as well.
They come in various shades. Might need to mix them a bit. Do some test patches first.
