Do you polish a slab first before using water based stains on it?
My husband wants to have a stained concrete slab for our house but I can't find any information if it needs polished first before staining it.

Seems like polishing it after would make it dull unless the sealant brightens it up.

One job I'd hire a real pro to do to get it right.
Most stains need to have the floor acid etched before applying the stain.
AL lot of things can effect how a stain floor comes out, age and condition of concrete, chemicals in the concrete, moisture, to name a few.

Google concrete staing for lot's of info.

Thank you for your information.

The slab he wants to stain would be a new slab. I told him already that as far as polishing that he wouldn't be able to do it himself. I've warned him about it being permanent as far as the stain goes and he would have to put a new flooring over the top if it didn't turn out. He doesn't seem to mind to much.

If we went with the concrete paint even though it does chip and isn't as nice could that be removed and have the floor stained later? I didn't know if that would be easier since we are wanting to not waste a bunch of money while building the house. My husband is also wanting to stain the floor blue which is my favorite color but I don't know about having it as the floor. I figured if we could paint the floor and then scrape the paint off later and have it stained it would help if he ended up not liking the blue otherwise he will have to floor over the top of it.

It would be near imposable to remove the paint and stain later.
You can not just finish a slab floor and stain it without waiting quite awhile.
You would have to know which stain you want to use and read the instrutions on how long to wait.

What type of price range should we be looking at for someone to come in and stain/polish/seal a new concrete slab that is around 998 sq.ft.?

I do not belive that it is polished completely smooth prior to staining. The person doing the concrete would have a good idea of how to leave the slab prior to staining, I would just ask them. I do know that you want to let the concrete cure before staining. I bought a video online about staining concrete because I wanted to do my basement, but I didn't end up doing it. The video was pretty informative. If you google Bob Harris, or Concrete Network you can find some great info. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the information.

I was looking around and I noticed epoxy floors that I thought looked better than stained concrete. What is the difference between it and stained concrete? How well does it hold up with a lot of walking and UV on it? Is it cheaper and easier to do than staining? Which would be a better option between the epoxy or polished/stained concrete that would require less care?
