Direction of hardwood floors
Hi all. Can I get some input on the direction that my new hardwood floors should be laid? It is slightly complicated, but I am laying engineered wood on top of existing solid hardwood. One of the reasons is because the previous owner made extensions to the house and did not extend the old solid hardwood. I believe the old solid hardwood is laid perpendicular to the joists. Should I lay the engineered wood parallel to the existing solid wood? The floor guy I got to help me said to lay the engineered wood perpendicular to the existing solid wood. The problem that I have with that suggestion is that the floors will run against the length of the house. If I follow the advice, I have a hallway that I would be laying boards the short width section instead of flowing with the longer length section. Assuming the house is rectangular, shouldn't I be laying boards parallel to the longer side of the house? Thanks.
