Default Different Material at Entry?

We have a 560 sf condo in S Calif. Hasn't been updated since '88 (when it was built). Currently carpeted with a quarter-circle (enuff to accommodate the swinging of the door) of vinyl flooring at the doorway. We are replacing carpet with bamboo/hardwood/hw-look laminate flooring. Fiance wants to put down an alternate material (stone or tile) at the quarter-circle entry due to extra wear. Won't this look funky? Do we need a more durable material than hardwood/bamboo/laminate at the entry? Thanks for your input.
