Darn Painted Concrete Floor

I have a painted concrete floor in the basement. It was painted with a 1 part expoxy paint.. the paint didn't stick.. so it's chipping up in several places.. Now, I am considering putting some tile down.. but I know the tile won't stick to the paint... and I do not want to even try to get the paint off the floor (I have asthma and the fumes would kill me.. and oh, the mess!!) So, I was wondering, is it possible to put down some cement backer board, secure it to the exiting concrete floor, and then tile away?? Or does anyone have a better idea?? I would like to keep the floor waterproof as much as possible.. Much thanks for all your help!

Have you try pressure washer? If the paint didn't stick it should peel off easily.

The floor is in a finished basement.. should have been more clear....my apologies..will look for a picture... Thanks..

You could try a rental store and see if they have a floor grinder. The floor grinders are mainly used in the commercial world to level out concrete slabs prior to flooring. It would make quick work of your existing paint and leave a nice surface to start your tile work on.

could I then just lay the tile? or is there any other prep involved after grinding up the paint? Like etching or anything like that?

Dont take this the wrong way but it sounds to me as you are simply looking for the easiest way to fix a problem so you can hurry up and get it over with. However you are simply delaying the fact that the more you do this the wrong way the longer its finally going to take when you want it done right.
