Cutting square tiles to make rectangles instead?

Hi all. We're trying to choose a tile for our kitchen floor, and we really like the look of big rectangular tile. However, the style is kind of hard to find around here. Not to ask a dumb question, but is it possible to simply cut large square tiles in half and use those? Thanks!

Most ceramic tiles have a slight roll to the edges---a cut will have a sharp straight edge--

A little like cutting a pancake---
