Covering a balcony
I have a newly rebuilt balcony off of my master bedroom on the second floor of our tri-leval home. The deck is 5/8 tongue-in-groove plywood over 2" X 10" beams. I am looking into a polyurathane three step deck coating but I was also wondering if I can put down a hardybacker and then put down thinset with tile. What would give me the most durable deck for the money?
If I was you I would consider doing it this way
TI Proboard lay it right on the joists and tile over it
Tiling an outside deck is nothing like tiling indoors and considerably more expensive to do than other forms of deck when done right.
What is below the balcony? Does it need to be watertight to protect an enclosed space below? If you are considering a roll on membrane then presumably you would be open to a sheet vinyl type product ... As much as I personally hate the look of them, they are very common here in BC as relatively affordable and last OK with our climate.
