coat of poly on existing wood floors

Hi guys, moved into a home where somebody put wood floors in the kitchen and bath.

It looks really nice, admittedly, but isn't too practical. Especially now that we have kids taking baths and spilling things. So, to help these floors endure these years of messes, I wondered if another coat of poly would help?

The floors are pretty standard oak hardwood. Can I throw an additional coat of poly on them? I assume there is some already there? Does adding more help?

Will the rooms I add poly to (kitchen and bath), look different?/shinier than the other rooms?
