Cleaning ceramic tile surfaces

Hi guys, I'm hoping someone here can help...

I've recently bought a house which was previously owned by a guy who obviously loved DIY, but might not have been quite as good at it as he thought

The bathroom has been tiled from floor to ceiling - some of the grout is needing replaced (which is easy enough) - but the tiles are needing cleaned.
Specifically - it looks like when the guy was removing the excess grout during fitting - he didn't clean the sponge or tile surface properly, and the tiles have a kind of white sandy texture on their surface - it makes them very difficult to clean properly (and almost impossible to shine)

Is there an easy way to remove the thin film of grout from the tile surface, so that I can then clean and buff the tile surface? A chemical or something perhaps that can make it easier to remove?

Thanks for your help.

Dave

Try vinegar and water 50/50, no good.

Then straight Vinegar, still no good.

Try Sulfamic acid crystals, HD has them.

Oh, and use a good scrubby pad, HD has them with the handle, they come in a package with different colors, each color is courser than the next.
