Question

Clean/refinish hardwood

I am pulling up my carpet, and want to do refinishing 'organically.' I can't afford a pro. What am I to look for to know exactly what to do? I read to use steel wool and Johnson paste wax(???), Vinegar/water spray...to clean? Also, it LOOKS like boards hav eben replaced, as every 4th one or so is a different shade..could this have been planned?? A pro told me make it all one color, but I like it, but don;'t want to ruin it..I have a hand held sander, should I consider that?
