Check if floor is flat

What is the proper method to see if a floor is flat? I'd don't need it level just flat. This is my concrete basement floor. If I get concrete flooring patch any recommended brands or application methods?

Ardex Feather finish is a good trowel on patch---

If you have a large area a self leveling compound might be the answer---it is to soft for walking on---but is ideal under carpet/tile/laminate--

I use an 8 foot straight edge---and chalk---

I didn't think SLC was an option because my floor has a slight slope towards the center and I just have a few spots that are low.

Self leveling compound might be a problem if there is to much of a slope---try the Feather Finish----It is available at the Home Depot---

Check if floor is flat

The standard for flatness is 3/16" in 10 feet. You can get a cheap, 10' piece of angle iron or similar from your local hardware store.

You didn't say what type of flooring you were going to install, so recommendations of specific products is premature. Ardex Feather Finish is a very nice product, but if you are installing a floating floor, the vibration might be enough to break up the patching compound. You might be better off using layers of 15# felt or some other appropriate material.
