Ceramic tile over vinyl?

Is it necessary to remove the existing vinyl flooring before I tile my kitchen? The house is built on a concrete slab. The vinyl appears to be original from 1993, and is tightly adhered. My first instinct is to scrape it all off, but then I got to wondering if it's really necessary. Seems like it would act something like Ditra if I just left it in place. Has anyone done this?

Tile can be set over sheet goods--if the sheet goods are well stuck--are NOT a padded style--

And you can accept the fact that the tile will not be bonded as well as it would be over concrete or Ditra.

Use a modified thinset that is warrantied for use over sheet vynal or mix your own using unmodified mixed with liquid latex----

It is done frequently ----but there is an added risk of failure---
