Is it necessary to remove the existing vinyl flooring before I tile my kitchen? The house is built on a concrete slab. The vinyl appears to be original from 1993, and is tightly adhered. My first instinct is to scrape it all off, but then I got to wondering if it's really necessary. Seems like it would act something like Ditra if I just left it in place. Has anyone done this?
Yep can be done, but you are better off removing it completely. If you do leave it, use Ditra. There is an approved installation method for Ditra over vinyl.
