Default Ceramic tile over interior stairs

I'm having my stair case redone. It presently has carpet over hardwood flooring. The tiler tells me his plan is to leave the hardwood and cover it with 1/4 durock then the tile...sound right to the professionals?

Pete,

NO, that is not right.

First of all you should know that tile on wooden steps can develop grout cracks at minimum. The hardwood should be removed, it's just too unstable. You then install plywood as/if needed and then you can use your favorite backer board or membrane underlayment.

I wouldn't tile it if has any movement at all, triple stringers, 3/4 ply and solid as a rock, maybe.

If he were to leave the existing hardwood, add 1/4 inch durock, then probably another 1/4 inch or more for the tile and thinset he would be adding 1/2 inch to each stair. Most of the stairs won't matter as the ratio will be the same, but it would be evident at the top and bottom.

Is this significant enough to be a potential problem?
