Ceramic tile entry way question. Help!

Our front door opens up into our living room that is currently wall-wall carpet. I want to cut the carpet out in front of the door a little wider than the doorway and about as far out and lay ceramic tile to create a little place in front of the door to kick you shoes off, etc. How would I go about doing this. Could I just cut the carpet and pad down to the wood floor, screw a piece of cement board down and glue the tiles to it? What about a transition between the carpet and tile, how is this done? Thanks!

Ceramic tile entry way question. Help!

Floor prep is everything. Let's correctly identify your sub floor. Is this on the second floor or is the a living area beneath. If not and your home has a crawl space underneath to the earth. You may have to reinforce the existing sub floor if it is wood. Check to see underneath the carpet if you have a plywood, plank or composite-flake board.

As far as adhering tile to a new surface, you are correct to consider cementboard. I would suggest you not screw the board into a wood sub floor because the screws will back out use underlayment nails or roofing nails instead.
The correct choice of stuff to adhere the tile is mortar- thinset with additive.
A correct transition to finish the surface would be a metal trim design for tile application ie. Schluter trim.
Keep ion touch with your project
