carpet, what to look for?

I've never purchased carpet before.. so I'm not too sure what to look for..

I don't want builder grade, I want higher quality.. I've seen some stuff talking about face weight per square yard with low end being like 24oz and not sure where the high end is at? Any recommendations for this?

What makes a good padding?

What makes a good carpet?

Thanks

Without knowing what kind of carpet you like, plush, berber, etc, it is hard to tell you carpet weights and pad specifics. Different types of carpet, need different densities and thicknesses of pad, too.

Just go to a real carpet store. Tell them what your budget is. Then say i want to upgrade the pad. This is what i did. My carpet is really cushy. I basically told them. I don't want the cheapest. But i don't want the most expensive. Something inbetween which will holdup. They will need to come out and measure. Finally i pad for removal of old carpet. Also paid for them to move furniture. Don't go with those dick's at lowes. REAL CARPET STORE.

When you go to bend the carpet and you see the backing it is cheep carpet. What you want to see is NO backing. This will tell you that this carpet is high quality. It will cost more but it will last for a long time.

When you walk on it you will know you have quality carpet.

Not necessarily true. Some carpets, like berbers, you will see the backing when you bend it over, no matter the quality. As a general rule, face weight will tell you the quality of the carpet. 18oz is about the cheapest and 60oz is the best you will find in most carpet stores.
As far as pad goes, the range is 4lb to 8lb, 1/4" to 1/2". Different thicknesses and different weights are suggested for various carpets. A good pad will make even a cheap carpet feel better and last longer.

I agree with you on the weight of the carpet, buy quality.
