Carpet then base molding or what?

Over a new subfloor do I get the carpet installed first or measure up a certain distace from the subfloor and install the molding first?

You can do it either way...but the carpet layers like to have the base down first, it gives them something to tuck the carpet under.

It is easier to lay the base when you have a solid surface to work off of rather than the spring of the carpet. Keep the base 3/8" to 1/2" off the floor with a a plywood scrap as a spacer.

I prefer to do it the other way. I lay the carpet and then do the molding. This way I can cut the carpeting to the wall and not have to push it under the molding. I did some carpet last week and half the job was with molding and half without. The part without molding was a lot faster and looked just as good.

I think this is one of those things where either way works fine and is more preference than right/wrong.
My idea of a perfect day: No where to go and all day to get there.

I like to lay the carpet first, stretch it and hook it to the tack strip, and then install the baseboard. But as the old man used to say, "Each to his own, said the man who kissed the cow!"

Keep in mind that if you are laying new tack strip and there is no wall moldings, do not install the tack strip too close to the wall or the moldings will pinch the carpet.
