Carpet seam at doorway

I am installing new carpet in a bedroom and don't know how to make the seam with the existing carpet in the hallway. Do I cut the new carpet close to the hallway carpet ? It will not be very accurate. Also, how do I get the tape to seal ? - the doorway is narrow.

Thanks

Carpet seam in doorway

If there ie carpet in the bedroom and you are removing cut it at the doorwat leaving 4-6 in of the old carpet. You will need a carpet seaming iron and some seam tape.If the carpet was seamed in the doorway previously turn it up side down and place the hot oron on the back of the tape .Once the tape is hot you can peel the old tape off.Next let cool then fold carpet back and straight edge it where you want the new seam to be.Use a carpet knife or ulility knife with a brand new blade.Overlap the hall carpet over the new carpet. With your knife make several 1 in. cuts through the new carpet.Fold it back and straitedge it along your "trace cuts" .Put seam tape under it and seam it togeather.Be warned that this takes some time to master this skill.

I am no carpet expert, nor do I install any, but a friend of mine does and I thought I heard her mention something about the fiber directions too?

fiber direction

If it were the same kind of carpet ,yes you would want to keep the direction of the nap all going one way.If its different carpets it wont really matter.

To check for the nap direction, just brush the carpet with a swipe of your hand and see which way the fibres stand and lay.

Thanks for the info

It sounds like I should not try it the first time on the carpet I want to install.

Thanks
