Carpet/Padding Question? Which is more important?

Good Morning,

I have been told, that you can buy cheaper carpeting, (NOT total trash) but say I could step down 1 grade up carpet and upgrade the padding and have the same feeling? Is this true or just wishful thinking?

Same feeling but not the same wearability. The cheaper carpet will deteriorate faster.

It's a wash. If you put cheap pad under a carpet, it not only will flatten out before the carpet is worn out, it will also cause the carpet to wear out sooner. The biggest thing with any carpet is to vacuum 2-3 times a week. Keep it clean and it will last longer. I have seen cheap carpet last for years because it was maintained. I have seen expensive carpet ruined within a year. If it starts to get a wrinkle, don't wait, get it restetched. And don't automatically blame the installer. There are some carpet backings that will not hold a stretch.

I call BS.

My wife picked out the thickest, nicest carpet, and we put down a premium pad underneath. There's no comparison.

A good pad under a midling carpet is better than a cheap pad under the same carpet, but a nicer carpet is a nicer carpet, and you will notice the difference.

Especially if you walk barefoot on it
