Carpet over cement

I want to carpet my back room, which has a cement slab floor. The floor is raised about 2 feet from outside grade on a concrete foundation. Do I need to put any underlayment down besides the carpet padding before carpeting over it?

Shouldn't.

Thanks. I had been told by some people the cement would wick moisture and cause mold. But it was my understanding that would only be a concern if the pad itself was touching earth.

Moisture can be an issue and it must be allowed to evaporate. If there is a crawl space down below the base should be covered with plastic maybe, and the walls vented in a couple of places to allow for cross-ventilation.

The truth is...carpet is installed over concrete all of the time without any consideration being given to moisture migration from the slab. Sometimes there are issues, sometimes there are not.

How would one vent a wall properly?

Before you install the carpet, do a mat test. Just tape down a one foot square piece of 6 mil poly with duct tape and leave it taped on all four sides for 48 hours. Pull it up and check to see if there's any moisture on the poly or if the concrete is darkened where the poly film was. If it si, you may need to seal your concrete first before installing pad and carpet.
