Carpet Glued On OLD linoleum-HELP
My husband and I live in the home I grew up in and we are trying to do a few simple inexpensive projects to update the house. The house is about 50 years old. My parents had carpet in the kitchen for as long as I can remember and I wanted to put some vinyl tiles down. When we began to pull up the carpet and padding, we found more carpet underneath. It is very old and thin and it is glued down to the linoleum. When I tried to scraped it at a corner, the old linoleum began to crack and break apart. I would imagine that is why whoever layed the most recent carpet just put it over the old. (we can't imagine why else someone would!!) Unfortunately both of parents have passed, so I can't ask them what the deal was with the kitchen and carpet on carpet!
I am worried about using strong solvents in the house because we have a 16 month old baby girl. Also if there are any concerns regarding asbestos and the old linoleum, I don't even what to attempt to remove the old carpet. My question is can we lay plywood/OSB over the carpet and go from there. I know it sounds as bad as laying carpet over it, but I'm not sure what else to do. Any ideas would help. Thanks
