Carpet degradation or mold?

We are ripping up our carpet and preparing the floors for a hardwood install scheduled next week. When pulling up the padding in one room it appears though the carpet pad has degraded. Padding is very old...don't know exactly how old. Is it possible for padding to degrade like the photos show or is it more likely this would be mold? The room is on the upper floor. No known water damage so mold seems unlikely. Thanks for any help you might be able provide with this!

Carpet degradation or mold?

No picture was posted.
It's common for cheap padding to just end up looking like dust.

Carpet degradation or mold?

That's just the pad falling apart. Common with old pad.
