All carpet mills have good and bad grades. Just make sure it's nylon. Wool is great but really expensive. Polyester is cheaper but tends to ugly out. Don't buy because of wear warranty. Those are based on the length of the yarn and carpet yarn doen;t wear shorter. It loses it's twist and mats. Polyester is the worst at losing it's twist. Most carpet isn't warranteed being installed over the old pad. You can get a better deal from a corner carpet store than a big box.

There is a place in Georgia that sells to the public. Their # is 1-800-622-7561. Ask for Greg. They will either send you samples or you can look for carpet locally. Once you find the carpet, callthem and get their price. They will need to know the brand name, the style, and the color. Get any and all names and #'s from the back. Most stores private lable their carpets. They may need the store name. When you find the carpet you like they can send you the sample to make sure it is right. I have been dealing with them for 10 years. They will honor the manufacturers warrenty. The only draw back is you will have to have your installer pick the carpet up at the closest truck terminal. They are located in most citys.

By the time you pay the shipping, you won't save much. And most installers charge extra for picking up at a terminal. Make sure you figure all the costs if you go that route.

Even after adding in the shipping charges, their prices are lower than any retail prices I have found. I live in the St. Louis area and the freight Charge is about .75 per yard. I will be worth your while to get a price.

Trust Rusty on this as Nylon is absolutely best.As far as warranty a lot of stores will not warranty over existing pad as well as having their own installer install the product. If your underlay is in great shape you can buy carpet and get it intalled yourself and it should come with a manufacturers warranty. Check pad in traffic areas for density. A well bonded chip foam 8-10lbs is in my mind better than most.
