Can you apply New Mastic over Old?

Here's my tail of woe. Basement floor had some Asbestos Tile pop up from water damage. Majority of it is still intact. I'm leaning towards buying new tile and putting it down where the asbestos popped up, then covering the whole floor with someting. The something is another question if you want to reccomend an option. My real question is can I apply mastik or adhesive over the black mastic residue that is currently there or does that have to come up? I would really like to leave it there as I'm guessing it might have soem asbestos in it. Thanks to all.

I'd like to hear your tale of your "tail of woe". Try to keep it clean please.

You can apply more of the same type of adhesive over the old, (probably). But depending on your plans it may not be a good move to keep the old floor. You should decide what you're gonna do.

Well my wife found some "absolutely lovely" carpet tile so it looks like that's where we're headed.... Yes dear I can't contain my enthusiasm..if you know what I mean. So anywho is there a type of mastic/adhesive I should look for or a generic tile mastic? thanks
