can i put water based poly over oil base?

Hi, getting my bedroom floor redone. The guy said he was gonna spread oil based coat on bottom, then apply Bona Mega, then Bona Traffic on top. Does this sound right?

Application of water over oil is usually discouraged because of incompatibility issues. With any application of finishing materials it is best to stick with the manufacturers recommendations. The application of Bona Mega calls for a sealer first over their stain. I don't know what oil you are using and what brand but something tells me he is mixing and matching. It is very unlikely that this will work and there may be issues immediately or down the road.

You can always call the manufacturer from the number on the can to get their expertise. They are generally very knowledgeable and will be able to tell you if there is going to be a problem. IMO they are going to discourage this application.

I suppose you could but I wouldn't if they were my floors because of the compatibility issue and just getting the adhesion you want. Why isn't he using a water based finish for all coats?

Time to find a new floor guy. Bona is expensive. Applying oil first gives him a little pop in the wallet.

you can get a gloss water based. that should still give you your pop. i would not go over oil with water or vise versa. they just dont mix well. good luck.

Well you know the exact products he wants to use, call Bona and ask them if that is the correct combination of products. Nothing beats the manufacturer's advice.
