Question

can I just stain and poly my old wood floors?

I bought this old house and the floors actually look good, not alot of scuffs and no paint but, the color is lighter than I want and it doesnt have hardly any shine to the wood would it be okay to just stain it a darker cherry color and then use polyurethane coating without sanding any?

Thinking that for best results, you should sand down to bare wood, then stain / refinish , etc.

Depending on the size, I have heard of good results from just using a palm sander....Then again, I have also heard of bad results too.

If it were me (and it was with two floors), I would rent the floor sander (not a drum sander) and sand the floor / refinish yourself. The heavy duty sander will make the job much easier.
