I would only float this floor. By glueing bamboo to the vinyl, you have to trust that it is secure enough to the floor. Without pulling it up you will not be able to tell if they used unough or the right type of glue to keep the old floor secured for life the life of the new bamboo. With the vinyl you will not need a moisture barrier.

I agree that it would be good to do a floating system, or you could nail it. If you go floating, you are normally glueing each board to the other board. Also you can keep the boards from having too much movement by putting a quality underlayment down first. Such as a rubber and that will make it feel like a soild glue down installation without the need of nailing or glueing it down.

hey IceT

wondering what you mean by nailing it... board to board? or into concrete.? now the sheet vinyl would be the "rubber underlayment" is that what you mean?

You can lay down a plywood sub-flooring and nail into that. Sorry I didn't mention that part.
For the Rubber underlayment, that is a foam or rubber that is designed for floating systems. I recommend the rubber if you want the best type of walk. The cost is a bit more than foam (about $2 sqft vs 0.75 sqft for the foam), but you will thank me later.

You can glue board to board if it is a locking system.I'm not sure how well it would hold together if it is tounge and grove.

thanks IceT, if i were to add the plywood then yes i would definitely nail it but my whole question was can i install over the sheet vinyl and use vinyl as the barrier like woodman58 commented.. so instead of "rubber" use the vinyl??
its not locking so i was a little wary of glueing board to board floating or not....
so still a little confused...

There are some woods that the T&G can be glued together. I have not worked with them. Have you checked with the manufacturer? They will be the best source for this info.

If you float the floor, you would need a foam or rubber to under the floor. So you will need something more than the vinyl if you are going to float it.

Vinyl sheet flooring can not be used in place of the foam underlayments needed for a floating system.

If it is a straight tongue and groove (like almost all solid flooring is), you do NOT want to float that. The only flooring that should be floated is that which has a lock mechanism rather than a straight tongue and groove. Like the picture below.

Buy a lock together bamboo made for floating, and lay it over the vinyl with a layer of laminate underlayment in between. No other method will be recommended.
