Can I get away with not sanding these floorboards?

Hi guys, I'm hoping to avoid sanding these floorboards before I stain dark and varnish. Would it work or would it look awful?

Is there a way to clean the boards a little without fully sanding?

Thanks for reading.

Stain and varnish an inconspicuous area, like a closet, and see what your results are.
But some extra elbow grease now will net you so much better results for years to come.

If there is ANY old urethane/aluminum oxide/wax on the floor, stain will not penetrate and varnish will not stick.
I'd sand the whole thing to properly prepare the surface for stain and varnish..
