Can anyone HELP me? Bamboo vs Hardwood

Cost aside, which is better? I hear Bamboo is more durable but you are unable to refinish it like a wood floor. Is this true? I've read that bamboo is glued together which is why you cannot refinish. I am getting rid of the carpet in my house due to asthma/allergies. BUT I've learned that some/all? Bamboo is treated with formaldehyde which is a health concern for an asthmatic. Secondly, is this something I can install myself? I have tiled floors before but never wood. Or is it worth having it installed? Can anyone help me out? THANKS!!

If it was mine I would go with prefinished hardwood.
There thousands of 100 plus year old homes with white oak floors still being walked on everyday.
We need to know what they used as a subfloor and what's under that, Basement crawl space?

Either can make a great floor. I like some of the bamboos on the market today. If you want longevity strand woven bamboo is roughly twice as hard as oak. You have to make sure it's a reputable brand though. Good bamboo has to be around 6 years old when it's cut. Any younger and it ends up too soft to be suitable for flooring. There are plenty of brands out that that sell young growth as bargain prices. You get what you pay for. Strand bamboo can be refinished. You can screen and recoat it just like hardwood. You won't be able to stain it however. Due to the adhesives used in it's construction it does not take stain well. The color in these products is from caramelizing the sugars in the fiber with heat to make them brown instead of natural tone. As far as ease of installation, look at the US Floors product line. The majority of their bamboo comes in a click system now. Cutting it is still a chore. It'll wear out a saw blade pretty fast, but it's as easy to install as laminate.

Thank you!! I think I will leave the installation to professionals! Joecaption... underneath is a crawl space and regular subflooring plywood maybe? I live in rainy Washington so there is a lot of moisture here. Is that going to be a problem?

It shouldn't be an issue with a click together system. You'll be floating it with a vapor barrier underneath the product.
