Bona Traffice over oil based poly
I just got mt entire house floors sanded and finished with oil based poly but now would like to put a coat of Bona Traffic for aided durability.. is this something that would work?

Yes Christy this is possible but there are several factors that are involved. First you will need to make sure that no chemicals of any kind were used on the floor other than those made for hardwood floors. Other chemicals can cause the new finish to not adhere to the old finish. Secondly you will need to use the Bona prep system which will clean the floors and allow the new finish to adhere. It will also help with any warranty issues as far as Bona is considered. Thirdly you will need a finish that is compatible with both the oil and water finish. As you know, oil and water do not mix. You will need a seal coat such as Zinsser Seal Coat which will adhere to anything and anything will adhere to it.

So to recap you will need to clean the floor with the Bona Prep system then lightly scuff or sand the floor then use the Seal Coat product, then apply the Bona Traffic.

I would advise hiring a professional to handle this. With hiring the right professional you will also get some peace of mind with the fact that if anything happens as far as the Traffic not adhereing then the responsibility falls back on the professional. It will also be cheaper to have them do it right the first time rather than come in and fix any mess that could happen.

Just my honest 2 cents worth.

Thanks very much...the purpose of using Bona Traffic was to increase the durability of the finish...but it looks like it is not going to be an easy job....may just wait and watch..

Only thing that was applied to the floors is the oil based poly

Depending on use the oil based poly should give you 5 to 7 years of service before needing a recoat. Make sure though and have it looked at at the first sign of wear. Don't let it get worn through to the bare wood or you'll need a complete sand and refinish. If you catch it in time then just a recoat is all that's needed.
